Measuring, Controlling, and Regulating Freeze Dryers
System Solution for Freeze Dryers: Control Unit with Integrated Control Electronics
In laboratory and medical technology, the quality of the measurement and control hardware plays a decisive role in determining the accuracy, stability, and reliability of a device. epis develops custom hardware solutions for demanding measurement and control tasks in which physical quantities such as temperature, pressure, humidity, or flow rate must be precisely measured, processed, and controlled.
This results in custom systems that combine hardware, software, sensors, actuators, and user interface and communication concepts into a high-performance, integrated solution.
By combining many years of experience in embedded systems, control engineering, sensor integration, and medical technology, epis creates tailor-made measurement and control systems that meet the highest standards of precision, safety, and reliability. From the initial concept through development, certification, and production to long-term product management, epis supports its customers as a development partner throughout the entire lifecycle of their products.
A wide variety of materials and designs are available for enclosure construction. Depending on the requirements for protection class, robustness, and certification, we use, for example, UL-listed plastics, die-cast aluminum enclosures, or custom-manufactured sheet metal constructions made from various materials. From the very beginning, we take into account factors such as EMC, heat dissipation, ease of assembly, and compliance with standards.

We place a special emphasis on high-precision temperature measurement. To this end, we develop analog and digital measurement circuits that are precisely tailored to the sensor technology, measurement range, resolution, noise immunity, and long-term stability. Whether resistance sensors, thermocouples, digital temperature sensors, or custom sensor interfaces: The measurement chain—from the sensor connection through signal conditioning, filtering, A/D conversion, and evaluation all the way to control—is consistently designed for accuracy and reproducibility.
Our solutions are based on modular control, I/O, drive, and HMI components that can be combined—depending on the application—into a compact single-board system or a decentralized system architecture. From the circuit design stage onward, we take into account all relevant requirements regarding EMC, galvanic isolation, signal quality, thermal behavior, interfaces, and compliance with standards. A clean analog design is crucial, especially for small sensor signals and high accuracy requirements: PCB layout, grounding concept, reference voltages, component selection, and calibration concepts are therefore specifically tailored to the measurement task.
Safety, reliability, and compliance with standards are particularly important in laboratory and medical technology. That is why we take industry-specific requirements and regulatory guidelines into account as early as the development phase—for example, in the context of the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), such as ISO 13485, as well as other relevant standards for medical devices and laboratory equipment. Our development processes support the structured implementation of these requirements throughout the entire product lifecycle.
In medical and laboratory applications, usability, hygiene, and regulatory requirements also play an important role. That is why we develop hardware concepts that can be integrated into single-sided or double-sided operating concepts, for example, with separate sterile and non-sterile sides.
The software architecture is based on the technical building blocks of our control, I/O, drive, and HMI solutions.
Particularly in laboratory and medical devices, the software architecture must not only be functionally robust but also traceable, maintainable, and compliant with regulatory requirements. For this reason, requirements, versioning, interfaces, testability, documentation, and the ability to perform updates are taken into account from the very beginning. In regulated environments, requirements from quality management, GMP/GAMP 5, ISO 13485, and, where applicable, IEC 62304 may be relevant to the software lifecycle of medical device software.
